Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
